Automotive engine

Automobile Engine

It is a machine that converts heat energy into mechanical energy, where the energy supplied to the engine is in the form of chemical energy such as petrol, diesel, etc.

Engines are widely used in the field of automobiles, agriculture, power generators, etc.

Types of engines

Basically, the engines are of two types

   Internal combustion engines (I.C engines)
   External combustion engines (E.C engines)

Internal combustion engines: The combustion of fuel takes place inside the engine.
Eg: Modern automotive engines

External combustion engines: The combustion of fuel takes place outside the engine.
Eg: Steam engines

Internal combustion engines are further classified into various types based on some criteria listed below.

   Number of strokes
   Engine cycle
   Fuel used
   Fuel supply systems
   Method of ignition
   Method of cooling
   Cylinder arraignment
   Valve operating system
   Types of design

Now, internal combustion engines are commonly used in automobiles.

Before internal combustion engines, there was a wide range of external combination engines like steam engines in automobiles.
